Bosnia and Herzegovina connected to the Mediterranean regional server for SSN (MAREΣ)
Among the core components of the IPA III project there is the pilot initiative on sharing Terrestrial AIS (Automatic Identification System) information, which is essential for maritime situational awareness. Participating countries were offered the opportunity to join the Mediterranean AIS Regional Server (MAREΣ), operated and maintained by the Italian Coast Guard.
In support of this initiative, and further to a Donation Agreement concluded in 2021 with the Ministry of Communications and Transportation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, EMSA donated one AIS base station to be installed at the Port of Neum. Recently, the Ministry of Communications and Transportation finalised the connection of the AIS station to MAREΣ and made operational by the national authorities.
The conclusion of this activity enabled the beneficiary to share their maritime traffic information with the EU and non-EU Members States participating in MAREΣ thus providing them with an enhanced monitoring of the maritime traffic in the Mediterranean Sea and contributing to an enhanced cooperation between the Mediterranean coastal States on maritime traffic monitoring.
