OPV 2025
Finland

The Baltic Sea is one of the busiest maritime regions in Europe. Every day, hundreds of cargo ships, ferries, bulk carriers, pleasure craft, and other vessels pass through its waters. At the same time, it hosts a unique and delicate marine ecosystem, with many plants and species not found anywhere else in the world.

So, for the Finnish Border Guard, effective and modern ships capable of efficiently patrolling this complex and challenging maritime region are indispensable. Under the OPV 2025 project, a finalist project in our Greening Award Initiative, three older offshore patrol vessels will be replaced by two new multipurpose vessels, with sustainability as a key pillar of their design.

The new vessels will be based on the iconic OPV Turva, currently in service, but with an even more optimised powertrain to suit the operational profile and to reduce environmental impact. The new vessels will have, among other features, a battery energy storage system and will be capable of using shore-side electricity. The battery energy storage system will be used while the vessels are at anchor (60% of the time) and will be charged by the vessel’s main engines during transits. Shore power will be used while the vessel is in harbour (20% of the time).
