The two project officers for the SAFEMED IV and Black and Caspian Sea projects, both funded by the EU, met with senior faculty members of the World Maritime University (WMU), in Malmö Sweden.  WMU is a postgraduate maritime university founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations.

The main objective of the meeting was to explore areas of further cooperation in the areas of implementation and enforcement of the main international conventions by supporting beneficiary countries of the two projects with targeted fellowships for Masters in Maritime Affairs. Such support should include advice and policy implementation on main international standards related to maritime safety and security domains, occupational health and safety as well as marine environmental issues. It should also provide a comprehensive understanding of maritime administration activities in the context of IMO and essential management tools required by senior maritime personnel to implement safety, security and environmental protection standards.

EMSA was greeted by the Director of Maritime Research, Dr. Jens-Uwe Schröder-Hinrichs, and given a full tour of the facilities as well as a clear overview of the various specializations which include Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration, Maritime Law and Policy, Maritime Energy Management, among others.
