Alternative fuels and power solutions
On 26 and 27 November, EMSA will hold a workshop on alternative fuels and power solutions for shipping and ports, which will be streamed live from our Lisbon headquarters.
The workshop will discuss three key reports into the safety of alternative fuels: safe bunkering with biofuels, the safety of ammonia as a fuel for shipping, and the safety of hydrogen as a fuel for shipping, including the recently published reliability and safety analysis.
Also presented will be a new study on the potential of synthetic fuels for shipping, following the earlier publication of studies on hydrogen, biofuels, and ammonia and wind-assisted propulsion. An analysis of the current concepts and projects being studied around the possible uses of nuclear power as a potential power source will also be discussed at the workshop.
The reports and analysis have been prepared to support the European Commission, national administrations, and industry in the ongoing decarbonisation of the maritime sector.
FuelEU Maritime
The second day of the workshop will be dedicated to the FuelEU Maritime framework, including the compliance process, certification of marine fuels and emission factors, and an update on implementation planning given by experts from the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport and EMSA.
