Under the naval fleet green update project, a finalist entry in the Greening Award Initiative from the Guardia di Finanza, the Naval Office has undertaken a range of actions to make its fleet more sustainable.

Obsolete neon bulbs on board the vessels in the fleet have been replaced with new LED lights, which ensure much greater energy efficiency and better illumination both inside and outside the vessels.

Installed on board too have been water economiser kits which can ensure water savings of up to 85% and energy savings of up to 75%, guaranteeing a greater reserve of fresh water on board and less use of the desalination equipment supplied to the larger class vessels.

The vessels have also been treated with biocide free and non-biocide paints on their hulls, ensuring that they are compliant with Regulation (EC) n.782/2003, dated 14 April 2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council, concerning the ban on the use of organotin compounds which act as active biocides in antifouling systems of ships.
