Can EMSA vessels support oil spill response activities outside European waters?

The Agency may provide assistance in case of pollution caused by ships as well as marine pollution caused by oil and gas installations affecting those third countries sharing a regional sea basin with the Union. Therefore, EMSA vessels may participate in operations not only in European waters, but also in waters of the aforementioned third countries.

In addition, the European Commission may offer support to other third countries in the event of a major oil spill. Through international cooperation, measures can be taken to minimise the impact of oil pollution. Provision of such assistance is decided on a case-by-case basis, taking various issues into account.
